9:17 So Ananias departed and entered the house, placed ¹  his hands on Saul ²  and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came here, ³  has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” ⁴

The Gentiles Receive the Holy Spirit

10:44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on ⁵  all those who heard the message. ⁶  10:45 The ⁷  circumcised believers ⁸  who had accompanied Peter were greatly astonished ⁹  that ¹⁰  the gift of the Holy Spirit ¹¹  had been poured out ¹²  even on the Gentiles, 10:46 for they heard them speaking in tongues and praising ¹³  God. Then Peter said,

19:6 and when Paul placed ¹⁴  his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came ¹⁵  upon them, and they began to speak ¹⁶  in tongues and to prophesy. ¹⁷ 

[9:17]  ¹ tn Grk “and placing his hands on Saul, he said.” The participle ἐπιθείς (epiqei") has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style. For the same reason καί (kai) has not been translated before the participle.

[9:17]  ² tn Grk “on him”; the referent (Saul) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[9:17]  ³ tn Grk “on the road in which you came,” but the relative clause makes for awkward English style, so it was translated as a temporal clause (“as you came here”).

[9:17]  ⁴ sn Be filled with the Holy Spirit. Here someone who is not an apostle (Ananias) commissions another person with the Spirit.

[10:44]  ⁵ tn Or “came down on.” God now acted to confirm the point of Peter’s speech.

[10:45]  ⁷ tn Grk “And the.” Because of the difference between Greek style, which often begins sentences or clauses with “and,” and English style, which generally does not, καί (kai) has not been translated here.

[10:45]  ⁹ sn The Jewish Christians who were with Peter were greatly astonished because they thought the promise of the Spirit would be limited only to those of Israel. God’s plan was taking on fresh dimensions even as it was a reflection of what the prophets had promised.

[10:45]  ¹¹ tn That is, the gift consisting of the Holy Spirit. Here τοῦ πνεύματος (tou pneumato") is a genitive of apposition; the gift consists of the Spirit.

[19:6]  ¹⁵ sn The coming of the Holy Spirit here is another case where the Spirit comes and prophesy results in Acts (see Acts 2). Paul’s action parallels that of Peter (Acts 8) and not just with Gentiles.
